‘The Hour Is Too Solemn’

For an invading land army, the line between aggression and brutality must always be dangerously thin; for any commanding officer, the job is to hold in check the triumphalist violence of his fighting men. And in 1940, the international conventions and rules attached to warfare that we know now were already in existence. The second of the Geneva Conventions, concerning the treatment of prisoners of war, had been ratified in 1929. Such prisoners were entitled to be treated with honour and respect. These things were understood very well, by the Allies and the Germans alike.
